How I Became a Childrens Magician
At Five Years of Age Magic Infuriated Me
My journey to becoming a kids magician started in southend when my friend showed me a magic trick, but wouldn’t let on how it worked.
I started my journey to becoming a children’s magician when I was five with my best friend in Southend. I used to go back to his house some evenings to play, and he used to do magic tricks, but he’d never tell me how the tricks were done, and that used to really infuriate me. I wanted to know how they worked.
Then I’d go out and buy my own magic tricks to perform for him and I wouldn’t tell him how mine were done. That’s what got me into performing magic. We moved to Colchester when I was seven from Southend because my Dad got promoted.
I went to a village school in Dedham called Little Garth, it was a small school, I was dyslexic, and they were really good at helping me learn. Mrs Brownwhite, the head, was brilliant, it was lovely, we were about 10 to 13 in the class, can you imagine that now? The school’s philosophy was to let the children be themselves. We all had our own very old-fashioned desk, I used to have all sorts of things around my desk, I used to have little shoots coming down from the bookshelf onto my desk and things like that. She just let me be really eccentric, she did that with all the children, she really nurtured our characters.

My First Performances Were End of School Term Shows
At Little Garth they let me do end-of-term magic shows, which is where I learned the importance of practice. Since I was only young I’d do the show, be nervous, and then things would go wrong.
I began realising that even if things went wrong it didn’t really matter because it made people laugh.
At first, I’d be quite clumsy and I’d drop things and people would laugh, that started me doing comedy magic. I did that the whole time I was there, every term from age seven until I went up to secondary school.
This was when I started doing performances for money, from the age of eleven I started doing children’s parties.

My Famous Five Minutes
Wacaday TV Show
I was on TV when I was eleven, there was a kid’s TV programme called “Wacaday” with Timmy Mallett on TV-am. They did a segment called “Famous Five Minutes” you could go on, tell a joke, or do whatever you wanted in front of the camera for five minutes. I never thought it was any good, so I wrote a letter to complain, I said that I had more talent in my little toe than anybody they’d had on the programme.
To my surprise, the phone went one day a Producer from TV-am asked to speak to me. She said, “Young man, I’ve got a letter in front of me saying that you think you are better than any of the other talents we’ve had on our show.” I said “Yes” and she said, “That’s very arrogant, but would you like to come in and prove it?” I said “Yes.” So, I took in my little ventriloquist doll called Louis, I went on and I did my little five minutes.
I met Annika Rice, she was really lovely and she threw her arms around me afterwards. Later they voted my performance the best ever “Famous Five Minutes.” They did invite me back but unfortunately, we were away on holiday and Mum and Dad didn’t want to break up the holiday to bring me back to London, which I never forgave them for!
Magic Makes Everything Possible
I was overconfident when I was little, I was very self-assured, and I just really believed in what I was doing. I’m actually quite a quiet and shy person, but when I put my costume on and I go on a stage, something changes. I become my alter ego which is much more confident and fun. I enjoy bringing people into my world, that’s why I call it “Chris Mayne’s world of magic” I love bringing people into a little fantasy world, where anything is possible. It’s fun, colourful, and it’s funny, those are all aspects of my own personality.
I’m first and foremost a magician. I’m very particular about my magic, I practice a lot. I build my own props, I spend years developing a trick. I enjoy making up the stories, and the pattern behind the tricks, there’s always a storyline, and I really enjoy doing that. I enjoy creating the magic, so that it can be the very best it can be. But it’s the performance I love the most. When I’m performing and I’ve got a big audience, it’s about giving and receiving. I give my performance, but I like the audience to interact with me. When you get it right, the energy you feel from an audience, the buzz you get, there is nothing you can take to make you feel like that. You are high on life, it’s a totally natural amazing feeling.”
